Borderland

MANI

“I stood at the border. Stood at the edge and claimed it as central, and let the rest of the world move over to where I was.”

(Tony Morrison)

Borderland; Outside mainstream, focus on the position of the “Others” My Objective: To grow an exploration and lucidity of the OTHERS within the Mono-cultural Muslim communities; In order to share a new language system with expanded visual vocabulary of the Micro-narratives. My hypothesis is that the Other’s socially ambiguous positioning relates to the “liminal spaces” in which they are displaced. I name this space as BORDERLAND. And for being culturally active in this situation, I suggest not to be invisible in social frameworks and public discourses. On the other hand, living in the borderland is a specific state of awareness which needs to expand within minorities of sex, gender, race, color, language, belief and so on… a kind of consciousness which explores new ideas of creativity. Questions: What can "place" mean in relation to displacement by anti-other hegemony? What can "identity" mean in relation to the anonymity enforced by conservative majority? Significance of the project: I would like to show the gap between center and periphery, majority and minority. To hint the alternations between these two different language systems, I make a creative condition for discussion by means of multidisciplinary arts; so that cross-culturally Micro narratives confront Meta narrative! My approach is to emphasize the contact zone out of the center, make it concrete. Finally sharing a “new language”, the? language of borderland! From this Art project grows an awareness of symbolism and semiotics and how an understanding of borderland leads to an exploration and lucidity of the “Other”. This project produces new experiences and knowledge for both artist and audiences that forms the outcome in the final work and further produces? interactive shows/performances/exhibitions to discover different and multidisciplinary interpretations of “living in Borderland and outside mainstream” among communicating with the public and proficient. This project completes over time to create unlimited ideas to grow awareness of the minorities in mono-cultural communities.
